Honestly, what's the best POS software for a small retail shop in Pakistan?

By Team RizqPos April 22, 2026 8 min read

I get asked this question almost every week. A friend opens a small mart in DHA, a cousin starts a clothing outlet in Gulberg, someone's uncle finally decides to move his kiryana store off a paper register. And every single time the question is the same: "yaar, kaunsa POS software thik rehta hai?"

So instead of typing the same WhatsApp message for the hundredth time, I'm writing it down properly.

First, forget the feature lists for a minute

Every POS website in Pakistan has the same screenshot — a giant table of green ticks. Inventory ✓, Barcode ✓, Reports ✓, Multi-branch ✓. After a while it all blurs together and you end up picking the cheapest one. Don't do that.

The real question isn't "which POS has the most features." It's: which POS will you actually still be using six months from now, when your shop is busy and you don't have patience for buggy software?

That's a very different question, and it filters the market down really fast.

What actually matters in a small shop

After watching dozens of shops set up POS systems (and a few abandon them), here's what I've noticed actually predicts success:

  • It works without internet. Pakistan's internet is what it is. PTCL goes down, Zong gets weird at 7pm, and you cannot stop billing because of it. If your POS freezes the moment Wi-Fi drops, throw it away.
  • Receipts print on the first try. Sounds obvious. It is not. A surprising number of POS apps fight with thermal printers for a week before someone figures out the driver. Ask for a live demo on your printer before you pay.
  • The cashier can use it without training. If your bhai at the counter needs a 30-minute tutorial to make a sale, the software is wrong, not the bhai.
  • You can call someone when something breaks. This is the one nobody talks about. Free / pirated software has no support. When your stock count goes weird at month-end, you're alone.
  • Your data isn't trapped. You should be able to export everything to Excel or PDF. If a vendor refuses, run.

Notice that "1000+ features" isn't on the list. Most small shops use maybe 15% of any POS. The other 85% just slows things down.

The mistakes I see in the first month

Three big ones, in order of how much they hurt:

  1. Adding products without barcodes. People type item names by hand for two weeks, then realize they should've printed barcode labels from day one. Do barcodes first. Even if you only have 200 SKUs.
  2. Not setting up the customer ledger. "Udhaar" is real. If you don't track it in the POS from the start, you'll have a notebook AND a software, and the two will never match.
  3. One device only. Owners install on the counter PC and never on their phone or office laptop. Then they wonder why they have no idea what their shop is doing while they're at home. Get a multi-device license. It changes how you run the shop.

What about pricing?

Honestly, anything between ₨ 15,000 and ₨ 30,000 per year is fair for a single-counter shop. Below that and you're usually getting an unsupported product or a "lifetime" license that quietly disappears in a year. Above that and you're paying for enterprise features you don't need yet.

The thing that actually matters is whether updates and support are included. A "cheap" POS that charges you ₨ 5,000 every time you need help is not cheap.

So what do I tell people?

Look, I work on RizqPos, so take this with whatever grain of salt you want. But the honest answer I give friends — even before mentioning RizqPos — is this:

Pick something built for Pakistani shops, that works offline, that has a real human you can WhatsApp when something breaks, and that doesn't lock your data in.

If RizqPos fits, great. If something else fits better for your situation, also great. The worst outcome is buying nothing for another year because you couldn't decide. A shop running on a paper register is leaking money every single day, and you'll never see it on a report — because there is no report.

Start with something. Improve later. That's the whole game.
